Asterias Rubens - Starfish

- Asterias Rubens -

The incredible organic shape from the collected starfish is beautiful up close. This starfish is found in Scheveningen beach. Most starfish have five arms but this may vary. Sometimes an arm breaks of but it then simply grows back.

Starfish have an incredible anatomy with detailed patterns. The little suction cups will attach the starfish to the bottom of the sea. The suction of the starfish is so strong, it can even open mussels. If you look up closely, you will see on top small holes, this is to filter the water.

The Starfish you see on this page is found in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. You can starfish in the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, next to mussel beds at a depth of 650 meters.
